There are costs for all of the following requirements:

  • Computer hardware = $150 through CAISI
  • Internet access (DSL line and monthly fee)
  • Router and server
  • ongoing support = about $200 a month (through OSCAR)

The CAISI team is beginning a list of potential funding sources. Additional suggestions are welcome.

What do I need to maintain and support the system?

Preparing your agency for ongoing maintenance includes the following tasks:

  1. Be clear about who will provide maintenance
    1. Find a JAVA programmer, group of programmers or business that will provide CAISI maintenance. This will probably cost $30-$50/hour.
    2. Create clear protocols and agreements with all supporting parties. Remember that the software is created by and for CAISI participants, and that the General Public Licence governing it states that the software can be changed and shared but that this must be done so that the resulting software and its source code is freely available to those who seek it and that these changes must be made available to other participants under the same terms (see GNU GPL). For the CAISI Project, The preferred first point of contact for contributions and integration is with the CAISI Project team. This is to preserve the integration efforts of the project and to prevent fragmentation of the project. There is however nothing stopping an agency or community from making its own contributions and/or branching off in another direction with the project or software. Note that some external IT companies may choose to have exclusive rights to making changes to the installation package and that this may thwart efforts to keep development integrated. In many cases, it could be more affordable to hire an independent programmer at cost than to pay for development through a vendor. Make sure that the company or group will provide support for the full installation as well as new CAISI updates, as they are developed.
  2. Identify staff in your agency who can be designated as "CAISI administrators." The person or team should be available to provide support during your agency's entire business hours (e.g. 40 hours a week or 24-7 depending on the agency).
  3. Create a protocol for getting IT support for CAISI. For example, call in-house CAISI administrators first, and if they cannot resolve the problem, call the central CAISI IT staff.
  4. Determine approximately how many hours a month of support you need from the IT staff and create a Support Contract for that many hours a month. This should include installation of the latest CAISI software updates.

What are the steps for maintaining our on-site server?

Agencies with the capacity to host their own server are responsible for their maintenance.
